Think Bigger !
There is a story about a famous professional golfer who helped a very wealthy Arab family. In return, the family wanted to repay the pro and had a representative ask him what he would like as a gift. The pro responded that there was no need for a gift but the representative insisted, saying it was part of their cultural custom. Not wanting to prolong the matter, the pro responded that he could always use a new golf club.
Later, the golf pro began daydreaming about what sort of golf club this wealthy family might give him as a gift. Surely they knew he had clubs which were custom fitted to his size and grip for tournament play. They would probably give him an ornamental club which he could display. As he thought more about just how nice this club might be he imagined they might give him a valuable antique club or even a gold plated golf club. Then he stretched his imagination as far as it would go and he thought to himself, why gold plated? Why not solid gold?
When a package arrived sometime later from the family it was card sized . . . not anywhere near large enough to hold a valuable antique golf club or solid gold golf club. Perhaps it was a desk ornament and he had allowed his imagination to wander much too far thinking about a gold golf club that would be worth thousands of dollars.
When he opened the package he found a note thanking him for his work and the legal deed, in his name, to a new country club . . . a “golf club”. Sometimes we need to think bigger . . . much bigger!
This is particularly valuable when preparing for college. Don’t be limited to what your classmates are doing. Don’t be limited by what’s already been done. Think bigger.
Running for a spot in your high school’s student government is great but why not run for an elective office in your town? Working after school is great but why not start your own business? Thinking bigger, much bigger, will help your application stand out from the other 10,000 applications received by the college you choose. Working hard doesn’t have to be boring; it can actually be a blast. Maybe you just need to think bigger.
