Myth #16
“I can put anything I want on my ‘My Space’ or ‘Facebook’ page. That’s my business; no one’s ever going to see it except for a bunch of other kids.”
Not! I repeat . . . NOT! There’s nothing private about the web. If you put information about yourself in the public domain . . . people will use it. One of the hot new trends in the employment world is tracking information about job applicants on My Space and Facebook. Admissions offices won’t be far behind. Colleges are already using My Space and Facebook submissions to discipline students for campus violations. I’ve heard of a few instances where enterprising admissions officers have used the web as part of the process. This practice is still unusual but becoming more common every day. Be prepared, the rules are changing and they’re changing quickly. In the future, you can expect anything you post on My Space or Facebook to be seen by the admissions committee who will decide whether you’re accepted or rejected at their college.
If you’re skeptical, consider this. Several colleges have already used material some students have published on their Facebook pages to discipline them for violating campus rules! If the campus administration and honor council representatives are already using Facebook . . . admissions offices won’t be far behind.
